"Change" means "shaking things up". Change needs movement. Without movement, nothing changes. Standstill is the opposite of change. But – when things are at a standstill, everyone feels happy: the employees, who view change as a threat to their comfort zone; the managers, because they have the steady daily routine chaos "under control".
No one really likes to change because everyone believes there are benefits in the old system. Force of habit is harder than concrete.
No one really likes to change and, if it is to happen at all, they prefer it to be very, very slow so that no one gets hurt. People and systems hate change. Why? Because the risk of failure is believed to be greater than the chance of success. So change is only permitted if my own success is guaranteed. In this case, success means "no personal losses please".
Unfortunately, change without risk is wishful thinking. New things can only come from innovations. Creative destruction of the old ways is what is required in the most literal sense. Renewal requires change. The willingness to change comes from inside people.
Change management means "moving people", because only people can move something. And you need to recognize what is good about the old ways, the past. After all, the old ways have worked up till now. And the new ways are not in place yet.
There has been no need for change until now. Inner vision only comes once the need has been clearly realized and communicated appropriately.
Only when the fear of personal loss is greater than the fear of change are you ready on the inside for movement on the outside.
And movement is everything.
Moving forward is true change management.
